AmeriCorps NCCC Cedar 2 team spends a week at camp

Cedar 2 poses on new playground equipment at one of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee. By Maryann Walbert AmeriCorps NCCC’s (National Civilian Community Corps) Cedar 2 spent week in Hartland, Wis. The team traveled south on September 18 from Red Cliff, Wis., hoping to improve the grounds of Camp Whitcomb/Mason, a camp serving the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee. The initial morning of the project consisted of meeting the camp’s full-time staff.

We Just Had to Ask: Tilford Kindergarten teacher Katie Harms

Katie Harms says a photo of her and fiance James Kuhn at the Ray House is her favorite photo. Katie Harms is a new teacher at Tilford Elementary, where she teaches alternative Kindergarten. However, she has been with the VS District since 2010, when she began as a Kindergarten teacher at Shellsburg Elementary.  Katie graduated from Mt. Mercy College with a Bachelor's of Science in Elementary Education with endorsements in reading and early childhood.

We Just Had to Ask: New VS Middle School teacher Alexa Francois

Alexa Francois' favorite pic of herself is her volleyball mug shot; she earned honors at Mt. Mercy. Alexa Francois is the new Vinton-Shellsburg Middle School Behavior Learning Center teacher. As a college student, she played volleyball at Mount Mercy, where she was the team MVP her senior year. She also earned All-Academic Awards as well as Team Spirit and Most Hustle Awards. Ms. Francois grew up in Dundee in northeast Iowa, and graduated from Starmont High School.

ISU Extension, VS FFA help with Farm Safety Day

On Saturday September 21, 2013, the Vinton-Shellsburg FFA helped out at the annual Farm Safety Day Camp, at the Vinton Fairgrounds. There were about 40 kids that came out to learn about farm safety. A few Vinton-Shellsburg FFA helped out with teaching hidden hazards on a farm, including PTO safety, lawn mower safety, and sun safety. Members also helped with being group leaders and serving lunch.

Class of 1968 holds 45th reunion

The members of the Vinton Class of 1968 recently gathered for their 45th reunion. The members of the Vinton Class of 1968 held their 45th reunion at John Ketchen’s Sept. 27, & Charles Yedlik’s Sept. 28, 2013. AmeriCorps NCCC Class 19 Corps Member Spotlight: Rachel Ruggles

Rachel Ruggles, from Billings, Mont., is a member of Maple 1 in NCCC’s Class 19. She arrived in Vinton on February 5, 2013, to start her 10-month service term on a team of people between the ages of 18 and 24. Maple 1 is made up of 10 people from across the country, and they are serving together in a number of service projects across the North Central Region throughout their term.

AmeriCorps NCCC FEMA Corps Class 20 Team Leader Spotlight: Evan McGloin

Evan McGloin, from Guilford, Conn., is the team leader for Pine 2 in AmeriCorps NCCC FEMA Corps’ Class 20. He arrived in Vinton on July 22, 2013, to start his 11-month service term leading a team of people between the ages of 18 and 24. Pine 2 is made up of ten people from across the country and they will serve together on emergency management and long-term recovery projects with FEMA.

AmeriCorps NCCC Maple 3 helps uncover Iowa's Native American history

By Tristen Shevey  AmeriCorps NCCC team Maple 3 has been working with the Jones County Conservation Board (JCCB) since August 9.  The team is conducting an archaeological study of a cave site in which they are uncovering Native American artifacts on a parcel of land recently acquired by the JCCB. A major part of the study is screening soil and collecting artifacts to be washed and catalogued by the Office of the State Archaeologist staff.

NCCC Oak 4 team contributes to the North Country Trail

By Forrest Maher For almost three weeks, Oak 4 has been assisting the North Country Trail Association: Itasca-Moraine Chapter near Park Rapids, Minn. The team is creating an extension on the section of the North Country Trail that loops around Lake 21. The work involves digging up topsoil from the ground and removing material that may make the trail uneven, such as roots and rocks.

Garett Golder, from Hamilton, Mont., is a member of Maple 5 in NCCC’s Class 19. He arrived in Vinton on February 5, 2013, to start his 10-month service term on a team of people between the ages of 18 and 24. Maple 5 is made up of eight people from across the country, and they are serving together in a number of service projects across the North Central Region throughout their term.
